2013 Conference

SOCALLT 2013 will be held April 11-13 on the campus of Texas Christian University in Ft. Worth! The theme for this conference will be:

Conference Program


The conference hotel is the Marriott Courtyard Fort Worth University Drive. Call the local number to make reservations at the group rate, mentioning SOCALLT. Phone: 817.335.1300. Group rate is $134 a night for a king or two doubles. There is no shuttle from the hotel to campus. However, many SOCALLT attendees will have cars! Make a friend at Thursday evening’s welcome reception at the hotel! If you prefer to walk, it’s less than a mile from the hotel to where the conference events will take place.

Welcome Reception

We are planning a special reception event to kick off the conference on the Thursday evening before the first full day of sessions. Attendees who have registered & paid in advance of the conference (by April 1) will be able to check in & pick up their conference materials at the reception event. Join us for cocktails and appetizers in Meeting Room B of the conference hotel at 6pm on Thursday evening in advance of the conference!

Connecting & Presenting on Campus

Our local host, Dr. Marie Schein, is working with TCU’s I.T. department to get unique visitor usernames and passwords for SOCALLT attendees who wish to have WiFi access during the conference. More on this process as information comes available, but those who register early (by April 1) are in a far better position to arrive with a username and password waiting for them! We are also working on getting everyone TWO logins for WiFi, and we recommend that if you are presenting from an iPad and would like to project your iPad wirelessly, you download and install something like AirServer or Reflector on your laptop. Bring your laptop (and any special adaptors you need to connect it to a projector… hear that, Mac folks?!?), and connect both your laptop and the iPad to the WiFi network explained in your conference materials packet. Once both devices are connected to the same WiFi network, and you have connected the laptop to the classroom projector,  launch your software, and turn on AirPlay mirroring on your iPad. Whatever you are doing on your iPad will appear in a window on your laptop, which, in turn, is projected on the LCD screen.

Vendors, Exhibitors, Sponsors, & Program Ads

SOCALLT thanks its generous sponsors and vendors without whom our conferences wouldn’t be possible. If you’d like to showcase your latest products useful in language teaching & learning, register as an exhibitor at the registration site (only $50!). Exhibitors will be provided two days of conference registration, and, in a high-traffic area where the conference takes place, a table, two chairs, electrical connection, and WiFi access.

We are also in dire need of sponsorship! Please contact SOCALLT President Georges Detiveaux, Georges.J.Detiveaux@LoneStar.edu, if you are able to donate prizes (books, CDs, DVD-Roms, trial memberships, copies of software, etc.) to be raffled at the end of each conference day. Additionally, if you are able to sponsor a coffee break ($75), a lunch ($200), or a dinner ($400), notify SOCALLT President Georges Detiveaux, Georges.J.Detiveaux@LoneStar.edu, and you will receive top billing in the conference program, both in print and on the web.

New to SOCALLT this year, vendors/exhibitors can purchase ad space in our program. 1/4 page ads are $25, 1/2 page ads are $50, and full-page ads are $100. Please contact Georges Detiveaux (Georges.J.Detiveaux@LoneStar.edu) for more information.

Keynote Speaker

This year’s keynote speaker is Dr. Greg Kessler (http://www.ohio.edu/linguistics/people/kessler.html), who will also participate in a panel discussion on Saturday in addition to his Friday keynote. Professor Kessler’s keynote topic is ‘Ubiquitous Computing, Collaboration, and the Future of Second Language Writing Instruction’.

Getting to Campus from the Hotel

There is no shuttle from the hotel to the conference, however, the conference events are less than a mile a way (about a 15 minute walk). Feel free to grab a ride from a SOCALLT member or officer at the hotel (a good place to meet someone is at the Thursday evening 6pm reception at the hotel!). To drive from the hotel, use these instructions. To walk from the hotel, try these. Parking on Campus

Our local host, Dr. Marie Schein, is preparing more detailed information for this section of the website. Check back soon! Due to another event on campus on Friday, Friday parking will be in one location, and Saturday parking will be in another (closer) location. Lots 6 and 8 here are good places for visitors to park.
UPDATE (4/8/13): Our parking lots will be Lot 3 and 4 (with shuttle) on Friday and Lot 6 and 7 on Saturday.

Important dates:

10/15/2012: Call for proposals goes live!
10/15/2013: Conference flier goes out.
1/31/2013: Deadline for all proposal submissions. Now extended to 10am CST, Friday, 2/15/2013!
2/28/2013: Online registration opens. $50 for two days of conference attendance.
3/15/2013: All reservations must be made by this date to obtain conference hotel rate.
3/25/2013: Tentative conference agenda posted to SOCALLT website. Additional exhibitor info posted, including sponsorship levels & program ad sales.
4/1/2013: Priority registration deadline (for conference materials, name badge, and WiFi access). If you are registering beyond this date, contact Dr. Marie Schein (m.schein@tcu.edu) immediately after having registered online.

4/11/2013: Pre-conference evening event. Time/location TBD. See above for more info.
4/12/2013: Friday night group dinner. Time/location TBD. Check with the welcome table at conference check-in for more info.
